After compaction in stainless steel ring, specimen is placed in the consolidometer with air-dried porous stones, and loaded with a stainless steel weight. Specimen is allowed to consolidate for 10 minutes, after which it is immersed in distilled water for up to 24 hrs. During this time, height of specimen is recorded to determine maximum swell.
